Time to start thinking about next year’s Oscars…
As I do more and more graphic medicine work– the confluence of the increasing recognition of the neural/cognitive benefits of this work and the attention to mental health neglect at all levels in all demographics as we emerge from the pandemic– I am asked more and more, “What is graphic medicine?
You can read my answer in illustrated essay form “If That’s What You Want to Call It: An Illustrated Rx-ay for Graphic Medicine” in last summer’s special issue* of Biography International (University of Hawaii Press). Or, you can watch this four-minute film, based on the essay, created and voice-overed by the nicest, smartest Ian Hawkes along with the Illustration Institute where I was lucky to have a two week (one week in the Portland,ME public library coaching teens, one week in the studio) residency on Peaks Island with the best of friends/artists/Institute Founders Nancy Gibson– and Scott Nash.
And, you can still ask me the next time we’re together.
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for this summer’s Graphic Medicine workshop (June 20 – 23, 2023) at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill on Cape Cod. Class size limited to ten students. Housing available (goes fast)! For more information/registration: https://www.castlehill.org/2023-workshops/becker
