About Suzy

I am an author/illustrator and a New Yorker cartoonist (not cartoonsist, so far they’ve taken one.) I began my illustratious career as an award-winning advertising copywriter, then founded The Widget Factory, a greeting card company. My first book was the internationally bestselling All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat, now in the Double-Platinum edition All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat (And Then Some). I have since written and illustrated nine other books for kids and grown ups, including the graphic medicine memoirs I Had Brain Surgery, What’s Your Excuse? and One Good Egg. I’ve also ghostwritten a couple of books.

Speaking of apparitions, Yankee magazine named me an “Angel Among Us” for my community service initiatives, including the Ride For AIDS Resources (Ride FAR, the country’s first HIV/AIDS bike-a-thon), which raised over $1 million for HIV/AIDS service organizations.

I have had the good fortune and honor of being a White House Fellow, Radcliffe Fellow, and a perennial finalist in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.

I was also the founding Arts teacher at the Parker Charter Essential School in Devens, MA where my daughter is now a student. We live with our well-meaning dogs in central Massachusetts.

Fun Facts:

I never studied art. I studied International Relations and Economics at Brown University. And I use it every day, dammit.

I went to Brown when John F. Kennedy, Jr. was there. Caroline Kennedy registered in the name of Suzy Becker at a Manhattan hospital to give birth to Jack in 1993.

I ghostwrote a James Beard award-winning cookbook. Can’t tell you which. Boo!

I’ve had jobs that make cartooning seem normal, like operating a line of machines at a synthetic mohair factory and folding submarine plans.

I totally believe in house numerology. I grew up in a #137, loved living in a #11 for a couple years and I’m raising my daughter in a #299.
